The daredevil, death-defying, stunt-biking hero Evel Knievel died on Friday aged 69. The self-confessed former card thief, safe cracker and hold up man suffered years of ill health caused by his bone-smashing antics throughout the 1970s.

Evel (born Robert Craig) is probably best remembered in the UK for his signature stunt cycle toy. I spend countless hours as a child launching him down the stairs, and he always came back for more.
